President Trump said on Monday that he would “love to meet” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his trip to Asia this week.
“I’d love to meet with him if he’d like to meet. I got along great with Kim Jong Un. I liked him. He liked me,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to Japan. “If he wants to meet, I’ll be in South Korea.”
Trump added he would be willing to extend his trip to meet with the North Korean leader.
Trump’s comments come after he said on Friday that he would be open to meeting with the North Korean leader, who he famously first met in 2019.
“Well, I would if he would contact. The last time I met him, I put it out over the internet that I’m coming to South Korea and if he’d like to meet, I’m open to it. I’d do it. If you want to put out the word, I’m open to it,” Trump said. “They don’t have a lot of telephone service. They have a lot of nuclear weapons but not a lot of telephone service. I’m open to it.”
“He probably knows I’m coming, right? Trump later added. “Yeah, I’d be open to it, 100 percent. I got along very well with Kim Jong Un.”
Trump met with Kim during his first term in an attempt to persuade North Korea to agree to a disarming its nuclear program. Pyongyang has since conducted a number of intercontinental ballistic missile tests.
