CVS says ‘system outage’ impacting some pharmacies

(NEXSTAR) — Need to pick up a prescription from CVS today? It may take you longer than expected as some of its pharmacies deal with a system outage.

In response to a user on X asking “how long CVS’ system has been down,” the company said that it is “experiencing a known system outage.”

In a statement to Nexstar, a spokesperson said CVS is “working to resolve a network connection issue that’s impacting some of our pharmacies.”

“While most of our pharmacies can still fill prescriptions, some patients may experience delays,” the statement continued. The spokesperson confirmed the outage is not related to Monday’s AWS outage.

Users on Reddit who appear to work in CVS pharmacies also posted about the outage, saying in some cases that while “it keeps coming back up and going down,” they aren’t able to complete transactions.

Hundreds of pharmacies have closed this year: How it could impact you

Late last month, CVS similarly confirmed it was “experiencing a known system outage” at “certain locations,” according to replies the company made on X.

The latest outage comes just days after CVS finished buying the customer prescription files from hundreds of Rite Aid stores that closed after the drugstore chain filed for its second bankruptcy filing earlier this year.

CVS said last week that it is now running 63 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drug stores across Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Customer files from 626 now-shuttered Rite Aid pharmacies in 15 states have also been transferred to nearby CVS locations.

Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based CVS Health Corp. runs several thousand drugstores. It also operates a large pharmacy benefits management business, and its Aetna health insurance segment covers nearly 27 million people.
