(NewsNation) —The Chicago Police Department said in a statement that 13 officers were exposed to tear gas during an incident involving federal authorities.

The officers were responding to a call about a car crash involving federal authorities and documented the incident after arriving on the scene. Additional supervisors were sent to the crash because of the involvement of federal authorities.

A DHS spokesperson told NewsNation that a chase between federal agents and an immigrant who entered the United States illegally ensued during a targeted immigration enforcement operation in which the driver reportedly rammed a Border Patrol vehicle and attempted to leave the scene.

Border Patrol agents used a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle, and two people, whom the agency identified as illegal aliens, attempted to run from the vehicle. Both men were arrested, the DHS spokesperson said.

According to the statement from the Chicago PD, a crowd began to form, and the police attempted to de-escalate the situation for the safety of all involved, but people began throwing objects at federal agents.

The federal agents then used tear gas on the crowd, exposing 13 Chicago police officers to the gas as well.

The department said the police were not involved in any federal operations in the area.
