Millions of taxpayers face Oct. 15 tax deadline, despite government shutdown: IRS

(NEXSTAR) – An estimated 20 million taxpayers will need to file before this week’s deadline, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) warned Tuesday.

While most people filed earlier this year, returns are due by midnight on Wednesday for taxpayers who filed an extension for tax year 2024.

For anyone wondering if the congressional stalemate in Washington might give them more time to file, the answer is no, according to the IRS. Despite the government shutdown, taxes are still due.

“Filing and payment requirements under the Federal tax law remain unaffected by the current lapse in appropriations,” IRS representative Anthony Burke told Nexstar in early October, explaining that that the agency’s budget is part of a separate funding package.

Despite the looming deadline, some will still have more time to file.

For taxpayers who were affected by “terroristic action” in the State of Israel throughout 2024 and 2025, the IRS is postponing the deadline until Sept. 30, 2026.

The IRS has also announced postponed dates caused by natural disasters. The timing varies by location, and includes places affected by storms, flooding, tornadoes, drought and more.

Taxpayers who wish to file a paper return can find forms and instructions on the IRS website.

“If at all possible, file electronically, and request that you receive your refund by direct deposit,” tax attorney Adam Brewer previously told Nexstar. “I know no one really loves to give their banking information to the IRS or to the state, but if you want your refund quickly, you have to give them the direct deposit information.”
