(NewsNation) — Former U.S. Attorney for East Virginia Jessica Aber died from epilepsy, according to the state medical examiner.

The determination was reported to the Virginian Pilot on Aug. 20 by a representative from the medical examiner’s office.

“The manner of death is natural and the cause of death is sudden unexpected death in epilepsy,” Jennifer Starkey, medicolegal administrator for the state medical examiner’s northern district office in Manassas, told the outlet.

Aber was found dead March 22. Her family said she died in her sleep and had suffered from epilepsy and associated seizures for years. She was 43.

Aber started her role at the Eastern District of Virginia as an assistant U.S. attorney in 2009. From 2015 to 2016, she held a senior position as counsel to the assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s criminal division. Following that, she took on the role of deputy chief of the criminal division at EDVA.

In 2021, Aber was nominated by former President Joe Biden for the position of U.S. attorney and received unanimous confirmation from the Senate. She stepped down in January when President Donald Trump took office.
