(NewsNation) — A Republican lawmaker was booed offstage by hecklers while honoring the life and accomplishments of a longtime county clerk in upstate New York.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., was among local dignitaries honoring the late John Zurlo during a renaming ceremony at the Clinton County Government Center in Plattsburgh, New York.
While on stage, Stefanik — a supporter of President Donald Trump — was booed and stepped down from the podium in respect of Zurlo.
Protestors shouted and clapped as she stepped down. The unruly crowd was urged to stop being disrespectful, but continued to yell and interrupt speakers,

Stefanik later returned to the podium and paid tribute to Zurlo despite consistent yelling from the protesters.
“Today’s event was about honoring John Zurlo,” Stefanik said to local media, via WCAX, following the public address.
“It is a disgusting disgrace that this is what the far left does, rather than understanding that his family has been through a tremendous amount. It was about honoring his legacy.”
