(NewsNation) — The sheriff of Arizona’s Maricopa County has ensured they are ready for Election Day.
The Phoenix-area county came under scrutiny during the 2020 presidential election, as the Arizona Senate launched a publicly-funded investigation into election fraud after President Joe Biden won the state.
The claims made by former President Donald Trump and some of his supporters were unfounded. More recently, ballots were damaged in the area — some even destroyed — by an arsonist last Thursday.
“We want to make sure that security is for democracy in this election campaign,” Maricopa County Sheriff Russ Skinner told “NewsNation Now.”
“We want to make sure that our community feels safe and secure,” he added.

Ballot box arson also occurred in the Pacific Northwest, with votes destroyed in Washington and Oregon on Monday.
As for a repeat of 2020, Skinner says they hope it is not the case, but the county is prepared for any possible circumstances.
“This is a process for democracy, and we want to make sure that everybody respects each other, and hopefully nobody’s out there doing criminal activity,” Skinner said. “Are we prepared? Absolutely so. Again, we know that there is some divide amongst the politics involved in this, but I want to make sure that we keep our community safe and secure.”
According to Decision Desk HQ polling averages, Trump has a 1.9% lead on Harris in Arizona based on 62 polls.
