(NewsNation) — Voters in New Jersey headed to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in several consequential statewide and local elections.
The New Jersey governor’s race is closely watched this election cycle and will see Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a four-term U.S. representative and former Navy helicopter pilot, face off against Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman who came within three points of winning the governorship in 2021.
The race has been particularly important, with both President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama making 11th hour appeals to supporters to bolster their party’s candidate.
Both candidates were evenly matched in campaign funding, making the contest a key test of voter sentiment less than a year into Donald Trump’s second term.
New Jersey is one of several states where Trump gained considerable ground in 2024, improving on his 2020 vote share by about five percentage points. Democrat Kamala Harris still carried the Garden State, but the roughly six-point margin was the narrowest for her party since 1992.
Also on the ballot for New Jersey voters Tuesday will be New Jersey Assembly races. There are a total of 40 Assembly districts in the state with two seats per district. As a result, the top two finishers in each district race will be elected.
At present, Democrats have a tight grip on the chamber with a solid 52-28 majority.
Polls close in New Jersey at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday. Track the results of New Jersey’s statewide and state legislature elections in the trackers below:
