(NewsNation) — Texas Governor Greg Abbott wrote on the eve of Election Day that he would impose tariffs on any New Yorker who move to Texas after voting ended.
His X post stated, “After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC.”
Abbott’s office did not immediately respond to NewsNation’s request for more information on how those tariffs would work.
The power to impose tariffs falls within the federal government’s authority in the Constitution, not the states.
Why Mamdani and Sliwa’s names are on New York City ballot twice
The race for New York mayor has been closely watched nationally. President Donald Trump endorsed independent candidate Andrew Cuomo on Truth Social.
Trump’s endorsement read in part, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, [Zohran] Mamdani is not!”
Democratic socialist Mamdani is the front-runner of the NYC mayoral race based on polling on Oct. 29 from Quinnipiac University.
Polling suggested Mamdani had a lead with 43% followed by Cuomo with 33% and Curtis Sliwa (GOP candidate) with 14%.
