(NewsNation) — The story of America’s unofficial royal family will soon play out in homes across the nation.

Netflix has announced its upcoming historical drama, “Kennedy,” led by Academy Award-winning actor Michael Fassbender as the titular family’s patriarch, Joe Kennedy.

The eight-episode series, which details the rise of an American political dynasty, was inspired by Fredrik Logevall’s biography “JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956.”

The first season will follow Joe and Rose Kennedy as they raise their nine children and make their “improbable ascent” to national acclaim in the 1930s.

Known for glitz, glamour and tragedy, the Kennedy family has a storied history in American politics, including former President John F. Kennedy, former senator and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and, most recently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s tenure with the second Trump administration.

Showrunner Sam Shaw said he is thrilled to explore “this saga of a family and a world in transition.”

“The story of the Kennedys is the closest we have to American mythology — somewhere between Shakespeare and ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’,” Shaw told Netflix.

“But Fredrik Logevall’s stunning, nuanced biography pulls a veil on the human strivings and burdens behind the myth, revealing as much about our present moment, how we got here and where we’re going, as about the Kennedys themselves,” he added.
