(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump will meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the White House on Monday to discuss trade and defense.
It will be the first meeting for the two leaders.
One major issue the two are expected to discuss is Australia’s mining of rare earth minerals, which are critical for technology.

Trump recently lashed out after China announced that it was putting export controls on rare earth minerals, promising steep tariffs for the country.
Australia could be an alternate source for such minerals, while also reducing China’s dominance in the industry.
Tariffs are likely to be another topic of conversation, along with Australia’s reliance on Chinese exports.
The Aukus agreement, which Trump placed under review, could be discussed as well. The agreement would have Australia acquire conventionally-armed nuclear-powered submarines jointly built by the UK and Australia and incorporating cutting-edge technology from the U.S. and UK.
