Chipotle gives out ‘Celebrity Cards’ for free food: Who has them, and why?

(NEXSTAR) – “Twilight” actor Taylor Lautner announced this week that he was gifted a “Chipotle Celebrity Card” (along with a miniature bathtub filled with guacamole) after exchanging DMs with Chipotle on Instagram.

“Here’s a Celeb Card so we never have to worry about where the hell you’ve been loca,” reads a note from Chipotle that accompanied the card (referencing a line from the “Twilight” series), according to a video Lautner posted online.

Lautner’s wife (also named Taylor) later shared a separate video showcasing the loot, which included a Taylor Lautner action figure bathing in the guac tub.

“Most of the time I forget that I’m married to, like, a celebrity,” she said. “But it’s moments like this that I’m reminded of it.”

What is a Chipotle Celebrity Card?

A Chipotle Celebrity Card, according to Chipotle, is a special pass “presented to notable figures who have publicly expressed their passion for Chipotle.” The pass entitles cardholders to free food — usually “one free Chipotle meal per day” along with chips, a side and a drink — for the duration of the promotional period. During that time, cardholders can also redeem a catering order for up to 50 people.

Cards are generally valid for 1 year, but can be renewed at the discretion of Chipotle, a representative told Nexstar.

“To be considered for a Celebrity Card, you must be an authentic fan of Chipotle and organically share your passion for the brand in everyday life,” the representative said, adding that current cards are held by only “a small group of brand superfans, celebrities, athletes, musicians and creators.”

Who has a Chipotle Celebrity Card?

The very first Chipotle Celebrity Card was presented to Ozzy Osbourne in 2003, “after he frequently mentioned his love for Chipotle” on his reality show “The Osbournes,” Chipotle’s representative confirmed. In his case (and as far as Chipotle has said), Ozzy’s card granted him “free Chipotle for life.”

Other notable celebrities known to have a Chipotle Celebrity Card include skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, DJ and music producer Diplo, singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, rapper Big Sean and prominent TikTokker/singer Addison Rae.

A Chipotle communications manager said athletes including tennis pro Taylor Fritz, pro golfer Max Homa and NBA player Mikal Bridges have Celebrity Cards, as does Chris Nikic, who became the first Ironman competitor with Down syndrome to finish the competition in 2020. (Chipotle confirmed Nikic’s “superfan” status has prompted the renewal of his card for each year since.)

Aside from celebrities, a select few non-famous “superfans” have also been given the opportunity to earn a Celebrity Card. In 2024, Chipotle held a contest to “extend celebrity status” to five people who demonstrated their worthiness in an online video. Chipotle did not say whether any of the cards presented to non-celebrity “superfans” were still active.

“We evaluate renewals annually to make sure the card is held by our most dedicated fans and those who continue to celebrate the brand,” Chipotle’s rep said.
