President Trump is meeting with Argentinian President Javier Milei at the White House on Tuesday.

The Argentinian leader, who recently secured a financial lifeline from the Trump administration ahead of key elections, arrived shortly before 2 p.m. EST, shaking hands and smiling for photos with Trump.

Milei lavished praise on Trump ahead of the meeting.

“Your commitment to life, freedom and peace has restored hope to the world,” Milei wrote on social media Monday, congratulating the U.S. president on securing a ceasefire deal in Gaza.

“It is an honor to consider you not only an ally in the defense of those values, but also a dear friend and an example of leadership that inspires all those who believe in freedom,” he said.

Trump has faced criticism from Democrats for the administration’s bailout of Argentina’s economy, coming to the aid of a longtime Trump ally in Milei.

Experts told The Associated Press that Milei comes to the White House with two clear objectives: negotiating tariff exemptions or reductions for Argentine products and discussing plans to prop up Argentina’s economy.
