(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump was scheduled to meet with Argentina’s President Javier Milei on Tuesday to discuss tariffs and trade.
Milei has garnered the attention of U.S. conservatives for his attacks on so-called “woke leftists” and his cuts to state spending. He has lavished praise on Trump ahead of his visit.
In addition to tariffs and trade, the leaders are likely to discuss a $20 billion bailout for Argentina after the value of the country’s peso began to slide.

Milei’s party recently suffered significant losses in a local election, in which voters expressed frustration over economic contraction, rising unemployment and corruption scandals. The results signaled Milei’s free-market policies were losing support.
Last week, amid a U.S. government shutdown and unprecedented layoffs of federal workers, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the United States would allow Argentina to exchange $20 billion in pesos for an equal amount of dollars.
Democrats criticized the deal, accusing the Trump administration of using American taxpayer dollars to benefit those loyal to him.
In addition to the bailout, intended to stave off currency devaluation and prevent inflation from rising, Milei is likely to seek the reduction or elimination of tariffs on Argentinian products.
