LIVE Video: White House holds press briefing on Day 1 of shutdown
The Senate on Wednesday for a second day in a row rejected rival measures to fund the government, this timing voting to prolong a shutdown that began at midnight with their actions.
The results mirrored Tuesday’s votes on the same legislation, with two Democrats and Sen. Angus King (I-Vt.), who caucuses with Democrats, voting for the GOP measure.
There were few signs of progress in terms of ending the shutdown, though a handful of senators were holding talks on the Senate floor during votes.
The Trump administration has threatened to conduct layoffs of federal employees during the shutdown, which has been widely seen as a way they might put pressure on Democrats.
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought was set to hold a 1 p.m. call Wednesday with House Republicans about the shutdown. And White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt is briefing reporters alongside Vice President Vance.
Here’s what else to know about the shutdown:
Are national parks open during the shutdown?
Does it impact student loan borrowers or the FAFSA?
Did Democrats vote for the GOP funding bill?
President Trump’s administration has threatened mass firings and potential program cuts if funding expired. Labor unions on Tuesday filed suit to try to prevent job actions beyond traditional furloughs, calling the threat “not only illegal – it’s immoral and unconscionable.”
