(NewsNation) — Crafters may miss Joann’s yarn and fabrics, but Michaels is weaving the brand into a new in-store concept.
The company announced this week that a “Knit & Sew Shop” is now available in Michaels stores across the U.S. and Canada. The dedicated shop features the Joann name and logo, and a curated selection of threads, sewing notions and yarn, plus fabric in most locations.
Fabric and craft retailer Joann to go out of business and close all of its stores
The store-within-a-store will carry popular Joann brands, including the Big Twist yarn collection, set to hit shelves at the end of October.
Michaels said the Knit & Sew Shop will also introduce new in-store services such as fabric cutting tables, which will be available in more than 650 stores by mid-October. New sewing machines are for sale, as well.

The rollout comes months after Joann announced it was going out of business and shuttering all its stores. Michaels later acquired Joann’s intellectual property and private label brands, with plans to integrate them into the company’s portfolio.

Michaels now carries fabric in more than 840 stores and plans to expand to more than 250 additional locations, the company said Wednesday. It’s also expanding its yarn selection by 25% this year to meet “strong consumer demand.”
As part of this week’s announcement, Michaels unveiled another concept called “The Party Shop” — an apparent effort to fill the void left by another defunct retailer, Party City.
“The launch of The Knit & Sew Shop and The Party Shop at Michaels is a transformative step forward on our mission to become the go-to destination for fueling creativity and celebration,” Michaels CEO David Boone said in a statement.
Michaels was founded in 1973 and currently operates 1,300 stores across 49 U.S. states and Canada.
