President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. led the National Culminating Activity of the “Tara, Basa! (Let’s Read) Tutoring Program” at the University of Makati in Taguig City on Sunday.

PHILIPPINE President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. on Monday said the government’s flagship tutoring initiative has reached more than 348,000 Filipinos, vowing to scale up efforts to address persistent gaps in the country’s education system.

Speaking at the culminating activity of the “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program” in Taguig City, Mr. Marcos said the project has helped struggling students catch up in reading while providing stipends and training to college tutors and support to parents.

“The future of the country is in the hands of our youth, and the skills of our youth are in the hands of our teachers,” he said in Filipino.

The initiative, implemented by the departments of Social Welfare and Development, and Education, deploys college students as tutors and youth development workers to assist elementary learners and their parents.

Parents also attended “Nanay, Tatay Sessions” to support their children’s learning at home, Mr. Marcos said.

The President acknowledged ongoing challenges in education, including classroom shortages and lack of teachers and textbooks.

He urged the agencies involved to intensify the program’s rollout to reach more communities. — Chloe Mari A. Hufana
