California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday condemned the shooting of Charlie Kirk, the co-founder of conservative Turning Point USA, as “reprehensible” and “vile.”

“The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form,” Newsom wrote on X.

Newsom notably welcomed Kirk to the inaugural episode of his podcast launched earlier this year as the Democratic leader sought to find common ground with conservative figures.

Kirk’s condition was not immediately clear. The Utah-based Deseret News reported that an alert from Utah Valley University, where Kirk was speaking to a crowd, said a suspect was in custody.

Reactions have poured in from figures on both sides of the aisle.

“We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” wrote President Trump on Truth Social.

Top Democrats have responded with sharp rebukes against political violence.

“Political violence has no place in America,” wrote Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

“Political violence has no place in our county. We must speak with moral clarity. The attack on Charlie Kirk is horrifying and this growing type of unconscionable violence cannot be allowed in our society,” said Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), who faced an arson attack at his residence earlier this year, an incident that underscored the threats faced by high-profile political figures.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) said Wednesday afternoon he was being briefed by law enforcement following the incident.
