Amazon to end Prime program allowing shared free shipping

(NewsNation) — Starting Oct. 1, Amazon Prime membership holders will no longer be able to share their free shipping benefits with people who don’t share their address.

The company announced the end of its Prime Invitee Program in an update to its customer service page, encouraging users to either sign up for their own Prime memberships or utilize the Amazon Family program. Through the Prime Invitee Program, users could share free, two-day shipping with one other adult, even if different addresses were used.

With Amazon Family, Prime members can share benefits with one other adult in their household, up to four teens — if they were added before April 7, 2025 — and up to four profiles for children. However, the company said users must reside at the same primary residential address and spend most of their time there.

Amazon’s Prime signups in the United States fell short in the run-up to Prime Day sales event in July, Reuters reported.

For those who opt to create their own Prime membership moving forward, the cost is $14.99 per month after a 30-day free trial or $139 annually.
