(NewsNation) — United Airlines flights bound for major hubs across the country were grounded on Wednesday as the airline investigated a system error.

The outage affected airports including Chicago, Newark International Airport, San Francisco, Denver and Houston, according to FAA data.

“We are working with customers to get them to their destinations after a technology disruption on Wednesday evening,” the airline told NewsNation in an update on Wednesday night.

“The underlying technology issue has been resolved, and, while we expect residual delays, our team is working to restore our normal operations.”

Customers flooded X, formerly Twitter, seeking information about why they were stuck on the tarmac.

“United flights sitting on the Denver Airport tarmac due to computer issues in Chicago,” Alan Billman wrote on X.

“They pulled us out of the terminals so those landing could deplane. I count at least 50-60 planes sitting and waiting.”

United told passengers on X that the delays were due to a “technology outage” and to “manage gate availability at destination airports.”

“We’re aware of the system error at this time and are working on a fix to have you on your way as soon as possible,” United told one customer.

“We understand that this disruption has caused frustrations during your travel and appreciate your continued patience. If you require assistance, please DM your confirmation number.”

Newark Airport posted on X that it was experiencing flight disruptions due to the system outage and asked passengers to check with their airline for their flight status.

The cause of the issue wasn’t immediately made public.
