(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump has given his take on Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ad that sparked outrage online.

Trump was boarding Air Force One en route back to the White House on Sunday when he was asked about the blonde hair, blue-eyed actress and the revelation that she’s a registered Republican.

“She’s a registered Republican?” the president said. “Oh, now I love her ad! Is that right? You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans. I wouldn’t have known, I’m glad you told me that.

“If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”

Some were critical of American Eagle Outfitter’s new ad campaign featuring Sweeney, claiming that it promotes eugenics. The tagline is “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”

In one video, she crosses out the word “genes” and replaces it with “jeans.”

The ad sparked debate about Western beauty standards and race.

Vice President JD Vance also came to Sweeney’s defense earlier in the week, sarcastically encouraging Democrats to “continue to tell everyone who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi.”

American Eagle stood by its campaign in a statement on Friday.
