(NewsNation) — Nearly two years after Virginia passed a law requiring age verification to access porn websites, a majority of adult sites are still wide open, an Axios review found.
The review looked at the top 57 active “porn tube” sites, outlined by toppornsites.com as of Tuesday.
Four websites asked Virginians to verify their age and identity with a government-issued ID, complying fully with the Old Dominion’s law.

While 16 sites were completely blocked, three were accessible after clicking one button. However, the rest — the majority of those top adult sites, nearly 65% of landing pages — required no verification at all.
Virginia was among the first states to pass legislation regulating access to porn sites. There are currently 18 states with some form of limitation in place or soon to be in place, according to the Age Verification Providers Association.
Last week, South Dakota, Georgia and Wyoming passed similar laws to Virginia’s, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that a Texas law mandating age verification on adult sites doesn’t violate the First Amendment.
With the high court’s ruling and more than one-third of the United States enacting legislation, Virginia’s slow progress on enforcing the law might foreshadow other states’ progress as well.
