(NewsNation) — A thief stole personal belongings from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem at a restaurant in Washington, the Homeland Security Department confirmed to NewsNation.

While Noem was eating dinner, the thief stole about $3,000 in cash, as well as her driver’s license, keys, passport, DHS access badge and blank checks, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told NewsNation.

“She had the cash because her whole family was in town (including children and grandchildren) and was treating them to activities, dinner and Easter gifts,” McLaughlin told NewsNation.

Noem receives Secret Service protection as part of her job. NewsNation has reached out to the agency for comment.

It is unclear exactly where her agents were stationed while she was having dinner.

CNN, which first reported the story, said the Secret Service had reviewed footage from security cameras at the restaurant and observed a white male wearing a medical mask take her bag and leave.
