(NewsNation) — Despite volatility in the stock market, those in the shrimp industry are welcoming President Donald Trump’s tariffs as they believe they will drive up the price of imported seafood.

John Williams, executive director of the Southern Shrimp Alliance, said in a statement that for generations, family businesses have been unable to compete with foreign producers.

“We are grateful for the Trump Administration’s actions today, which will preserve American jobs, food security, and our commitment to ethical production,” Williams said.

What is ‘Black Monday,’ and why do Wall Street experts fear another?

Louisiana Shrimp Association President Acy Cooper told “NewsNation Now” on Monday that businesses can’t keep losing jobs.

Cooper says after being “dumped on” for 20 years, the tariffs are a “glimmer of hope.”

“We welcome Trump’s tariffs,” Cooper said. “We back him 100% on this. … We agree that it may hurt for a little while, but it’s going to get better. It has to get better for us.”
