(NewsNation) —  Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist and popular right-wing social media streamer, claims he was the target of a “would-be assassin” who was later shot by police near Fuentes’ suburban Chicago home this week after the man allegedly killed three people in downstate Illinois.

Fuentes wrote on the social media platform X that the man parked his car in front of his house and approached his door with a pistol and what appeared to be a crossbow. In the post, Fuentes included security camera footage showing the man approaching his door wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Fuentes wrote in the post that he was livestreaming at the time and said the man called his name after ringing the doorbell and trying the doorknob. His account of the event lines up with a police report saying that the suspect in the downstate shooting had been shot by police near Fuentes’ home Wednesday night.

NewsNation local affiliate WGN reported that the man, who was identified as John R. Lyons, refused to obey police commands and began shooting at police. Officers returned fire and killed him just after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that officers responded to the block where Fuentes lives for the report of a man with a gun. Police said that the man had previously run into another home, killed two dogs and then ran into a yard in Fuentes’ block.

The resident of the home where the dogs were killed told WGN that he found Lyons in his basement.

“When I turned on the light the guy was standing at the end of the basement and just started shooting. He shot, shot, shot. I blocked my son and I told him to get upstairs and get his mother and get out of the house. He ran. He was fast, and by the time I was running, he was chasing me through the basement shooting,” Scott Wishecoby told WGN.

Multiple media outlets reported that Fuentes’ address was made public after he reportedly had an altercation in November that took place outside his home. The report said Fuentes’ address was leaked over a controversial social media post.

“Last night an armed killer made an attempt on my life at my home, which was recently doxed on this platform,” Fuentes wrote X on Thursday. “The gunman carried a pistol, crossbow, and incendiary devices. I believe he intended to kill me. He is now dead. I am okay!”

Police said that they believed Lyons was the suspect in the slaying of three people near Champaign, Illinois, earlier on Wednesday. Court records obtained by WGN showed that Lyons was in a dispute with one of the three family members killed.
