NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A prominent Tennessee state Senate Republican leader has been arrested for driving under the influence and hit-and-run in Georgia.
According to preliminary information from Georgia law enforcement, troopers were notified to be on the lookout for a Ford Edge with Tennessee license plates that was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run incident on Jekyll Island on the southeastern edge of the state.
Georgia State Troopers located a vehicle matching the description in the parking lot of Jekyll Market. Upon arrival, emergency medical services were already on scene evaluating someone who had tripped and fallen.
The individual was identified as Kenneth Yager, the driver of the Ford Edge.
Yager, R-Kingston, 77, was just reelected to the 12th Senate District in November. He was also reelected by the Senate Republican caucus as Chairman last month.
While speaking with Yager, troopers detected a distinct odor of alcohol on his breath, and he admitted to being involved in a crash earlier but did not know law enforcement was en route.
Georgia authorities said Yager consented to field sobriety tests and submitted to a breathalyzer.
As a result, troopers said Yager was arrested and charged with DUI, hit-and-run and failure to stop at a stop sign. He was transported to the Glynn County Detention Center, where he posted a $2,117 bond, according to a media release.

The investigation into the hit-and-run is still ongoing, per the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
Yager issued a statement on the arrest, which he said took place while he was on vacation in Georgia.
“An unfortunate incident happened last night. On the advice of my attorney, I cannot discuss the particulars oat this time. I am and will continue to cooperate fully with authorities to bring this incident to an appropriate conclusion,” Yager said.
