CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — Stop & Shop supermarkets across Connecticut have bare shelves due to a cybersecurity issue.
“A lot of the shelves were empty, a lot of staples too,” Hamden resident Michael Montefusco said.
Shelf after shelf were bare causing customers like Montefusco to cut his grocery list short.
“Kleenex, tinfoil, eggs and cottage cheese, that’s it,” Montefusco said. “I had a much larger grocery list.”
Stop & Shop’s parent company Ahold Delhaize said that they were made aware of a cybersecurity issue in their U.S. network last Friday that impacted truck shipments.
In a statement they said, “customers may see more limited inventory than usual for certain products. Stop & Shop is committed to serving our customers, and we are taking steps to ensure our stores are stocked for our shoppers in the coming days.”
The supermarket chain is investigating to prevent future issues.
Some of their online pick-up and delivery services were canceled this week. Their pharmacies are also impacted.
The timing is tough with large meal preparations underway for Thanksgiving a couple weeks away.
Hamden customer Kyle Doughtery said the section he shops at most was empty so he grabbed what he could.
“I’m a vegetarian so when there’s nothing in the produce department there’s not much for me to purchase,” Doughtery said. “I got an acorn squash.”
Stop & Shop locations across the state from Hamden to Enfield to Waterbury have bare shelves, forcing customers to go elsewhere.
“I’m on my way now to a second store to try and go find what I need,” Montefusco said.
Employees at the Hamden location said they believe they should have more food on shelves by Tuesday.
